Sharon, Mercer and Greenville boys teams all got off to winning starts in Region 2-AA openers Friday night to highlight local winter sports action.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 68, Reynolds 32 — At Sharon, the Tigers doubled up on the visiting Raiders in the Region 2-AA opener for both clubs. Sam Schwiess had the hot hand for coach Brian Hoover’s club, drilling in 23 points that included 5 treys. Louis Brown added 12 points and Ryan Sypolt 10 for the hosts (3-1). Schweiss had 8 rebounds and Sypolt 8. Billy Altman had 6 steals and Preston Jefferson 6 assists.

Reynolds (1-2) was led by Russ Conley’s 16 points, while Chris Laverty added 12.

ä Greenville 51, Lakeview 46 — At Stoneboro, the visitors held off a fourth-quarter surge by the Sailors to notch the Region 2-AA victory. Greenville (1-0, 4-0) was led by Tyler Blaschak and Jordan Batt with 12 points apiece. The Sailors (0-1, 0-2) were paced by Dylan Bertin’s 15 points, while Cory King chipped in with 10.

ä Mercer 67, Conneaut Lake 53 — At Conneaut Lake, the Mustangs of coach Mike Williams reeled off their fourth straight victory while winning their Region 2-AA opener. Five Mustangs hit double figures in scoring: Wes Schaa 17, Adam Braymaker 14, Dustin Snyder 12, Andrew Erdos and Joel Pyle 11 each. Snyder added 7 assists, while Braymaker and Schaa each pulled down 9 rebounds. For Conneaut Lake, Cameron Kean pumped in 22 points.

ä George Junior Republic 65, Warren 56 — At Grove City, the host Tigers rolled to the inter-region victory. Mike Lemon had 20 points and 8 rebounds for Quad-A GJR (3-1), while Anthony Floyd added 11 points and 12 boards. Deon Hanton chipped in with 14 points. The Dragons were led by Jeff Eaton with a game-high 29 points that included 6 treys.

ä Campbell Memorial 77, Brookfield 55 — At Brookfield, the visitors poured in 32 points in the second quarter en route to the non-league victory over the Warriors (0-2). Antwan Dawson bucketed 35 points to lead Campbell Memorial while teammate Nate Hodge added 21 markers. Chad Kostra led the way for Brookfield with 25 points.

ä General McLane 69, Hickory 60 — At Edinboro, the Hornets (2-2) led 29-26 at halftime but were outscored 43-31 in the second half in losing the inter-region affair. Andy Banas (14), Jaymee Shephard (13) and Jordan Wilds (13) scored in double digits for Hickory. General McLane’s top scorers were Shawn Walker (24), Blidi Wreh-Wilson (13), Kellen O’Neil (13) and Dan Mulligan (10).

ä Grove City 48, Oil City 44 — At Grove City, coach Don Fee’s Eagles (1-0, 2-2) opened Region 6-AAA play with a 4-point victory over the Oilers. Maxx Stutz (15), Ryan McNamara (13) and Kyle Perrine (13) paced GC. Matt May scored a game-high 18 points for Oil City. Also, OC’s Nic Carson added 10 points.

ä Maplewood 71, Jamestown 52 — At Jamestown, Robert Cierniakowski (27) and Aaron Bryant (25) teamed up to score 52 points in leading the Tigers (2-2) past the Muskies (1-3). David Richter led Jamestown with 16 points. Also, Spencer Snyder and Tom Shannon added 10 points each for the Muskies of coach Rich Marshall.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Mercer 64, Commodore Perry 38 — At Mercer on Thursday, Kayce Jackal bucketed 15 points in leading the Lady M’s (1-0, 3-1) past the Lady Panthers (0-1, 1-2) in a Region 1 encounter. Also, Alexa Rymniak scored 11 and Claire Creasy added 10 for Mercer. Stephanie Cattron poured in a game-high 24 points for CP, which included 4 three-pointers.
