Herald Staff reports

Greenville and Sharon posted wins on Friday night which set up a big Region 3-AA clash next Friday at Stewart Field in Greenville.
The Trojans beat Hickory, 37-21, while the Tigers defeated Titusville, 41-28, in a shootout. Wilmington maintained the lead in 3-AA with a 50-0 rout at Reynolds.
Also Friday, Grove City earned a 29-20 win at Corry; Lakeview beat Conneaut Valley, 30-14, in Stoneboro; Mercer rolled over winless Conneaut Valley, 45-12, and LaBrae rolled over Brookfield, 60-8.
ä Greenville 37, Hickory 21 — Coach Brian Herrick’s red-hot Trojans spoiled Hickory’s homecoming Friday night, but their Region 3-AA victory didn’t come without a tussle.
“Both teams played hard; I feel lucky just to get out of here with a win,” said Herrick, whose team moved to 3-1 in their region and 6-1 overall. “We played well early, but we made some mistakes. Tackling wasn’t as crisp as I would have liked.”
And despite the loss, Hickory coach Frank Antuono was feeling good about his team’s effort: “The kids played hard against a very good Greenville team. I’m proud of their effort tonight. This is something to build on.
“There were a lot of tears in that huddle after the game and that shows they care. We’ll get this thing turned around.”
The contest was a game that featured a lot of big plays. In fact, it was an 80-yard punt return by Dylan Zuschlag that got the scoring started, shortly after Hickory’s defense stopped Greenville on 4th down at the Hickory 37. Mike Simons booted the point after for a 7-0 lead with 1:07 remaining in the opening period. Greenville moved out to 15-0 midway through the 2nd frame on a 1-yard run by R.J. Malson and PAT pass to Malson from David Holiga.
But Hickory showed some spark a short time later when Ryan Voisey hit speedy Elrico Jones with a 51-yard pass play to score. The PAT run failed.
Greenville threatened again shortly before half, moving to the 9-yard line. On a 4th-down play, Holiga found Nate Houpt in the corner of the end zone, but the referee ruled that he was knocked out of bounds by Hornet defender Andrew Walker before getting a foot down.
The Trojans moved on top 23-6 with 6:46 left in the 3rd frame on a 28-yard Zuschlag sprint and PAT run by R.J. Malson. But Hickory came right back. Evan Anzio broke loose, picked up a key downfield block from Jordan Fortuna and went 71 yards to score. Voisey ran in the PAT to cut the margin to 23-14.
Greenville put the game out of reach on a 6-yard run by Nico Zahniser, alternating in at quarterback, and PAT kick by Simons.
But the final minute of the game was a wild one. Greenville scored with 31 seconds remaining on a Taylor Malson 4-yard pile-driving run and Simons’ kick made it 37-14. But Hickory wasn’t giving up. A short time later, Voisey connected with Jones on a 45-yard TD pass with 17 seconds left and Sean Zippie’s kick made the final score 37-21.
“I’m glad we don’t have to play them again,” said Herrick of the Hornets. “That Jones is a great athlete. ... I thought our offensive line is very good and really makes our offense go.”
The victory moves Greenville into a battle for 2nd place in the region next week against Sharon.
“Sharon is always a big game,” said Herrick. “We’ll enjoy this win for a few hours then get ready for next week.”
Antuono feels the effort Friday will carry over to next weekend when Hickory (0-4, 1-5) takes on Reynolds.
“I just hope we can put the same starting team on the field for two weeks in a row,” said Antuono, referring to some problems with discipline with some players this season.
Notes: Zuschlag carried the ball 22 times for 132 yards. ... Andy Bayer had a fumble recovery, an interception and a sack on defense for the Trojans. ... Joey Manilla played a superb game at linebacker for the Hornets. ... Elise Baldarelli was named homecoming queen, while Sean Zippie was voted king. — By Lynn Saternow, Herald sports editor.
ä Sharon 41, Titusville 28 — At Tiger Stadium, the host Tigers took hold of the Region 3-AA tilt by tallying 21 second-period points, snapping a 7-all stalemate.
Louis Brown and Ronnie Howard caught touchdown tosses of 41 and 18 yards from Todd Rearick, and Mike Tomko tossed a 40-yarder to Dustin Norcross as Sharon secured a 28-20 margin at intermission. In the 2nd half Sharon’s insurance resulted from Rearick rifling a 10-yard TD toss to Jordan Moss and Nick Juranovich returning an interception 37 yards.
Rearick rushed for 51 yards and passed for another 192 on 10-of-18 accuracy as the Tigers (4-1, 6-1) bounced back from their lone loss. Brown and Tomko split 6 receptions and Howard hauled in another pair in addition to rushing for 43 for Tigers taskmaster Bob Fromm.
Sean Clark collected a 2-yard TD run and John Proano produced a pair on a 9-yard run from scrimmage and 80-yard kickoff return for the Rockets (2-4, 2-5).

DeMedal rushed for 99 yards on only 7 carries.
ä Grove City 29, Corry 20 — At Corry, coach Jeff Bell’s Grove City Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter for the victory.
The Eagles scored 22 points in the final frame after trailing 12-7 for the Region 5-AAA triumph. Grove City is 2-0 in the region and 5-2 overall. Corry fell to 1-2, 3-4.
Casey Shay had a big game for the Eagles, scoring touchdowns on runs of 6, 23 and 14 yards, while amassing 213 yards rushing on 29 totes. Ryan McGeehan also scored for GC, hauling in a 33-yard aerial from Tyler Dagres. Bobby Kowalsky booted 3 PATs, while Dagres hooked up with Jason Ferdeber for a 2-pointer.
Corry had a potent air attack, as quarterback Scott Frisina passed for 327 yards, hitting 18 of 30 passes. Craig Marti pulled in 9 passes for 223 yards, including a 6-yard TD. Nicholas Upperman scored 2 touchdowns on passes of 11 and 14 yards.

ä LaBrae 60, Brookfield 8 — At Addison, the visiting Vikings vanquished the Warriors in the All-American Conference Blue Tier Division tilt.
Bryan Watkins went for a pair of 14-yard runs from scrimmage and later added a 31-yard fumble return to lead LaBrae (4-0, 7-1) to its 7th straight success. Also, Evan Hill and Cameron Truss tallied 44- and 37-yard scoring sprints as part of a 36-point 1st-half outburst.
Denny Sulick scored from 5 yards out in the 4th frame for the Warriors (1-2, 2-6), but Brookfield was bludgeoned 304-81 on the ground and was guilty of 7 turnovers.
ä Lakeview 30, Conneaut Lake 14 — At Stoneboro, the host Sailors picked up a key Region 1-A victory as Kyle Scott scored 3 touchdowns on runs of 30, 49 and 18 yards. He amassed 160 yards on 21 carries for the game.
