BASEBALL
ä Sharon 15, Reynolds 0 (6 inn.) — At Transfer, Mike Tomko belted a grand slam and Todd Rearick twirled a no-hitter as the Region 1 champion Tigers (14-0, 17-0) became the 1st Sharon baseball team to go undefeated since Mike Smith’s squad in 1976.
Rearick struck out 11 and walked 4. Tomko was 2-for-3 with a double and Rearick was 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Also, Cory Johnson had a 2-run double, Gary Revale collected 2 singles and 2 RBI, Dustin Norcross ripped a pair of singles, Sam Schweiss was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and Zac Anderson had an RBI-single.
“I’m real proud of the kids,” said Tiger coach Bill Dorfi. “They showed a lot of heart this season.”
Luke Taylor took the loss in pitching 5 frames for the Raiders. He fanned 1, walked 2 and gave up 9 runs on 10 hits.
Sharon is expected to draw an opening-round bye in the upcoming District 10 playoffs.
ä Franklin 10, Hickory 7 — At Franklin, the visiting Hornets’ unblemished season was spoiled when the Knights notched a game-winning 5-run rally in the 6th stanza. Shawn Cogswell’s bases-loaded triple and Bryn Smith’s 2-run home run highlighted Franklin’s furious rally.
Starting pitcher Cameron Hovis yielded 6 runs on 7 hits, walked 2 and fanned 4 in 5 1/3 innings, then reliever Ryan Malachina earned the save. Also for Franklin (7-6, 7-12), Tyler Moss muscled a 3-run homer, Mason McFeaters another 2 hits, and Smith also doubled.
For playoff-bound Hickory (13-1, 17-1), Taylor Englebaugh blasted a 2-run homer, Lukas Gurrera singled and doubled, and Jaymee Shephard, Garen Ream and Ryan Voisey drilled doubles, with Voisey’s driving in a pair. Hickory reliever David Schafer allowed 5 runs on 2 hits and struck out 1.
ä Meadville 12, Grove City 1 (6 inn.) — At Grove City’s Memorial Park, the visiting Bulldogs dealt Grove City a season-ending setback.
Winning pitcher Dillon Tabar, in 6 stanzas, scattered 6 hits, fanned 5 and walked 2. He also hammered a 2-run home run and doubled. Also for MASH (11-3, 15-5), Dan Webster and Ben Lowmaster both singled and doubled.
Grove City starter Jim McConnell worked 2 1/3 innings and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits, walked 3 and whiffed 3. Garrett Molloy singled and doubled and Tyler Moser added 2 hits for Grove City (7-7, 9-11).
Regarding seniors Molloy, Moser, Ryan Devine, Derek Forese, Mark Revesz and Bobby Johnston, veteran Eagles’ mentor Pat Forese summarized, “I think I’m more disappointed for them (in not qualifying for the postseason) than they are, but we just had one of those tough-luck seasons.
“But they were a big part of our championship runs the last few seasons and they did a great job; they have nothing to hang their heads about. They played well. Sometimes things just don’t work out your way. But I wish them all the luck in the future,” Forese concluded.
ä Wilmington 10, Mercer 9 — At New Wilmington, the host ’Hounds concluded the campaign on a positive note on Chad Palladino’s 1-out RBI-single.
Ian Kelly walked and pinch-runner Adam Sankey advanced all the way to 3rd base on Rob Stowe’s sacrifice bunt, preceding Palladino’s heroics.
For Wilmington (6-8, 7-9-1), Shane Wagner’s 4-for-4 plate performance paced the Hounds, Phillip Woods and Frank Telesz each stroked a pair of hits, and Derek Leslie launched a 3-run home run. Woods tallied twice and Wagner plated a pair of runs. Wilmington’s Sutton Whiting won with 4 frames of 3-hit relief in which he fanned 5, walked 2 and allowed 2 runs (1 earned).
Mercer hurler Cody Frey went the distance and permitted 10 runs (9 earned) on 14 hits, fanned 5 and walked 2. Herbie Hennegan had 2 hits and scored 3 times for Mercer (3-11 in regional play), and Matt Cameron and Tyler Hoffman had 2 each, with Cameron collecting 3 RBI and Hoffam tallying twice. One of his hits was a two-bagger.
Wilmington coach Butch Edwards cited his seniors: Sankey, Logan Kaufman, Collin Fulkman, Leslie, Telesz, Bryce Brocklehurst, Chris Biedka and Palladino.
ä West Middlesex 6, Jamestown 5 — At West Middlesex, senior Matt Murray ripped an RBI-single in the bottom of the 7th inning as the host Big Reds (7-7) edged the Muskies.
Also for West Middlesex, Mike Winters was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Kyle Gregorich and Brian Hoover were both 2-for-4 with an RBI and Tyler Barris went 2-for-3 with a 2-bagger. Kyle Allen went the distance on the hill for the Big Reds. He struck out 7 and walked 4.
Dan Jenkins, David Richter and Butch Buchholz shared mound duty for Jamestown. At the plate, Michael Gross was 3-for-4, Ethan Adams went 2-for-4 and J.C. May doubled.
SOFTBALL
ä Grove City 2, West Middlesex 1 (9 inn.) — At Grove City’s Memorial Park, the host Lady Eagles eased to the extra-inning regional win.
In the home half of the 9th Becky Brahaney slapped a leadoff single, was sacrificed to 2nd by Casey Carrara, and advanced to 3rd on Kayla Coryea’s hit before Leah Yauger drew a 1-out walk, loading the bases. Brahaney then beat the throw to the plate on Kylie Dickey’s grounder to shortstop.
For Grove City (13-5, 14-6), Phylicia King cranked a pair of hits, as did Brahaney, and the latter tallied twice. Grove City head coach Shawnee Denbow also cited starting and winning pitcher Chelsea Filer, who fired a 4-hitter, striking out 8 and issuing only 1 walk. Denbow noted it was Filer’s 2nd 9-inning outing of the week.
Heather Michaels started on the mound for West Middlesex (14-4, 16-4), and worked into the 9th inning, Denbow reported.
ä Hickory 2, Jamestown 1 — At Hermitage, Stephanie Bush ripped an RBI-single, scoring Angie Stigliano in the 5th inning as the Hornettes (6-4, 8-7) qualified for the D-10 playoffs.
According to coach Tony Rock, Hickory faces Corry 2 p.m. Tuesday at Penn State-Behrend, Erie.
Logan Rock fanned 7 and only allowed 4 hits. Jonna Vellente had 2 singles and Carly Turk doubled for the Hornettes.
Jamestown’s Emily Lugg had 6 strikeouts and only surrendered 4 hits. Cass Grafton ripped a pair of singles for Jamestown.
´´ On Tuesday, Hickory suffered a 9-3 loss to Franklin. Jenna Haun whiffed 6 and gave up 8 hits in the win, while Rock struck out 7 and allowed 9 hits. Vellente and Turk had 2 singles each, Bush ripped 3 singles and Savannah Collier doubled.
ä Sharon 15, Reynolds 5 (6 inn.) — At Transfer, Julie Norris struck out 5, didn’t issue a walk and gave up 7 hits as the visiting Lady Tigers (8-6, 11-8) topped the Lady Raiders.
For Sharon, Sam Vallely and Ashley Buchsenschutz had 2 doubles each, Brittanie Vukovich ripped 2 singles, Rachel Shaffer doubled and Brittany Benedetto banged a 3-run triple.
Erin Scott went the distance for Reynolds. She fanned 11, walked 4 and gave up a dozen hits.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
ä McDowell 3, Farrell 0 — At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium on Senior Night, the host Steelers suffered a 25-10, 25-13, 28-26 sweep to the Quad-A Trojans.
For Farrell (1-15): Richard Williams 15 kills, 10 digs; Damar Muhammad 5 kills, 9 blocks, 5 digs; Daniel Davis 6 digs; Marquies Hyman 6 kills, 8 blocks, 7 digs; John McCrary, Nick Cimoric 5 digs each; Gene Phillips 7 digs; Robert Trudo 6 kills, 8 blocks, 21 assists; Jackson Jones 7 blocks, 6 digs; Jordan Wilkins 6 kills, 8 blocks, 5 assists.
Steelers’ seniors included Hyman, Williams, Muhammad, Wilkins and Kevin Talley,
Coach Maurice Campbell praised them for, “ ... how hard they worked. We definitely wish, as a new staff, we had had these guys longer. We’re proud of how they led the team, and we’re excited abut entering the District 10 tournament,” Tuesday in Meadville (site, time and opponent to be announced).”
