SOFTBALL
ä Kennedy Catholic 10, Sharon 1 — At Hermitage, the host Lady Golden Eagles eased to their 5th consecutive win as Liza Catania clubbed a single, double and triple and drove in 3 runs and Sarah Ritchey ripped 3 hits.
Kennedy’s Katie Ritchey scattered a half-dozen hits in a complete-game pitching performance in which she fanned 5 and walked 3. Also for KC (8-6), Cassie Fill, Emily Friedrich and Carlie Trenga all stroked a pair of safeties, with one of Fill’s being a two-bagger for head coach John Vasconi.
For Sharon (7-6), starting hurler Julie Norris was touched for 11 hits and 6 runs in 4 frames. Offensively for the Lady Tigers, Ellen Anderson and Kamala Black both singled twice.
ä West Middlesex 7, Sharpsville 2 — At West Middlesex, Bobbi Frazzini ripped 2 doubles, drove in 3 runs and scored for the Ms. Reds (12-3). Also for West Middlesex, Carrie Young singled, tripled, had 1 RBI and scored twice, and both Mandi Kedrick and Kori Aubel had an RBI-double and scored.
Heather Michaels went the distance for the Ms. Reds. She struck out 2, didn’t issue a walk and only allowed 4 hits.
Kaitlin Stewart only lasted one-third of an inning for the Blue Darlings. She gave up 4 runs on 5 hits.
ä Reynolds 8, Mercer 3 — At Thiel College, Erin Scott twirled a complete-game 4-hitter (all singles) and doubled and singled at the plate with 2 RBI as the Lady Raiders (6-8) topped the Lady M’s.
Scott struck out 8 and walked 6.
At the plate, Stephanie Collenette and Chelsea Greenfield both had 3 singles and 2 RBI, Kristen McDonald tripled and singled, Kelsey Gearhart doubled and singled and Lindsey Gruber ripped a pair of singlets.
Cassie Lipinski suffered the loss. She fanned 6, walked 3 and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits for Mercer. Jessica Trott struck out 5 and walked 4 in relief.
ä Slippery Rock 3, Grove City 2 — At Slippery Rock, a pitchers’ duel developed between righties Morgan Robinson and Chelsea Filer.
Grove City’s Filer took a 2-1 lead into the Slippery Rock 7th stanza and was an out away from victory. However 4 consecutive Slippery Rock singles, the last by Bennett, lifted the Lady Rockets.
Slippery Rock’s Robinson fired a 4-hitter, fanning 5 and walking 1, while Filer also fanned 5 and walked 1, but was reached for 11 hits. Both went the distance.
For Slippery Rock, Bennett singled twice and doubled, Ferguson forged a pair of hits, and Volpini doubled.
Grove City fell to 9-5 in its D-10 region and 10-6 overall, head coach Shawnee Denbow reported.
ä Hickory 2, Titusville 0 — At Titusville, Carly Turk ripped a 2-out double in the top of the 3rd inning to lead the Hornettes (6-5) to victory.
Stephanie Bush had walked and Jonna Vellente singled before Turk’s hit. Turk also singled in the game.
Logan Rock struck out 11, walked 1 and only gave up 2 hits for Hickory.
Titusville’s Cassie Savitz was also sharp on the mound. She fanned 11, walked 1 and only surrendered 4 hits. Ashley Larey doubled for the Lady Rockets.
BASEBALL
ä Hickory 9, Commodore Perry 5; Hickory 11, Commodore Perry 1 (5 inn.) — In a doubleheader in Hermitage. the host Hornets (10-0 in their District 10 region, 14-0 overall) hammered out a sweep, though they had to rally from a 5-0 4th-inning deficit in the opener.
In the nightcap, Garen Ream singled twice, doubled and drove in 3 runs; Brian Szabo singled, doubled and plated another 3; Taylor Englebaugh singled twice, and Chris Ferrari doubled home a pair in support of winning pitcher David Schafer. The latter fanned 4 and yielded just 4 hits and 1 walk in 5 frames.
Alberto Mateo started for Commodore Perry and was saddled with the setback. He was followed to the mound by Nick Huffman, Brett Eddinger and Joe Jackline. The latter tossed 2 innings.
In the opener, Hickory’s 5-run 5th frame knotted the count, then the Hornets’ stung CP for a game-winning 4-run 6th stanza.
Winning hurler Tyler Armstrong went the 7-inning distance by weathering 5 runs on only 4 hits. He struck out 6 K and did not issue a walk. Jaymee Shephard had a trio of hits and knocked in 3 runs and Szabo singled and doubled.
Losing pitcher Josh Cashdollar, in 2 1/3 innings of relief, whiffed a pair, but permitted a half-dozen 6 hit and 3 walks, resulting in 6 runs. Starter Kyle Myers managed 3 2/3 innings, but allowed 5 runs on 3 hits and a handful of bases on balls. He whiffed 3. Josh Webster singled and slammed a 3rd-inning solo shot for the Panthers.
ä Kennedy Catholic 15, Sharpsville 10 — At Hermitage, the host Golden Eagles won the slugfest, led by the arm and bat of Evan Mihlo, who mashed 2 doubles and a single and went the distance on the mound.
Also for Kennedy, Jake Yatsko, Lucas Grande and Rick DeMartinis all singled and doubled, and Dan D’Onofrio and Chris Baker belted a pair of base hits apiece.
For Sharpsville, Torin Karsonovich crushed a pair of doubles, Matt Totin also tonked a two-bagger, and Steve Ference singled twice. Casey Dumars started for Sharpsville’s staff and was relieved by Ryan Lindberg and Xavier Ranelli.
ä West Middlesex 12, Mercer 3 — At West Middlesex, right-hander Kyle Allen scattered 7 hits in a complete-game pitching performance for the host Big Reds. Allen allowed only 1 walk and fanned 4, and also aided his own cause by slamming a solo shot.
Also for Middlesex (5-5, 5-9) and mentor Jerry Novosel, Ryan Chupak went 3-for-4, Mike Winters 2-for-4, and Ryan Hoover and Logan Mihalcak 2-for-4. Chupak and Winters drilled doubles.
For Mercer, Brent Messett started on the mound and was relieved by Herbie Hennegan. Collectively they surrendered 11 hits and 7 walks while fanning 4. Matt Cameron collected 3 hits for the visiting Mustangs and Ian Dunn doubled and singled.
ä Reynolds 13, Wilmington 11 — At Transfer, the host Raiders (5-7) beat the Greyhounds (4-8) in a slugfest.
A key play in the game happened in the top of the 6th. Reynolds intentionally walked a batter to load the bases. The next hitter ripped a screaming liner to Taylor at the mound, who caught it and fired to third base for an inning-ending double play.
For Reynolds, Nick Young ripped 3 singles and a double while Tony D’Urso, Luke Taylor, Luke Perrine and Mike Bodnar had 2 singles each. Josh Hassel earned the win in pitching the first 4 innings. He fanned 5, walked 2 and allowed 9 runs on 10 hits. Taylor earned the save. He struck out 1, walked 1 and gave up 2 runs on 6 hits in the final 3 frames.
For the ’Hounds, Frank Telesz and Sutton Whiting both doubled and singled, Brandon Palladino collected a pair of doubles and Leslie registered 3 singles. Whiting suffered the loss. He whiffed 3, issued 1 walk and permitted 3 runs on 5 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
ä Sharon 10, Jamestown 0 — At Jamestown, Gary Revale fire a complete-game 2-hitter as the undefeated Tigers (12-0) blanked the Muskies (4-7).
Revale fanned 9 batters and walked 2. Offensively, the Tigers’ Mike Tomko smacked a 2-run homer in the 6th, Cory Johnson and Sam Schweiss both doubled and Dustin Norcross, Zach Kepple and Nick Juranovich had 2 singles each.
Tom Shannon took the loss. He had 2 strikeouts, no walks and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 3 1/3 frames. Also for Jamestown, J.C. May doubled.
ä Grove City 9, Oil City 2 — At Memorial Park, the host Eagles rode righty Randy Risch to the regional rout.
The sophonmore stymied Oil City through 6 2/3 hitless innings before surrendering Andrw Angros’ blooped, base hit to right field. Factoring in one of Risch’s 2 walks and a couple errors, Oil City scored 2 unearned runs. Risch also recorded a handful of strikeouts.
Offensively for Grove City (5-5 region, 7-9 overall) Ryan Devine and Casey Shay smashed solo shots. Devine drilled a single and double, also, while Shay stroked a 2-run single, Derek Forese ended with a pair of hits and 3 runs scored, Garrett Herald drilled a pair of doubles, and Mark Revesz ripped another pair of hits for coach Pat Forese.
For 1-win Oil City, losing hurler Ben Koyak KO’d 4, but also walked 4 and permitted 9 hits and all 12 runs in his route-going pitching performance.
ä Cambridge Springs 7, Lakeview 6 — At Stoneboro, the visiting Blue Devils edged the Sailors (5-9) as Shugerts earned the mound win. He fanned 5, walked 2 and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings.
Darin Hovis suffered the loss after allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings. He whiffed 1 and walked 1. Also for Lakeview, Gerald Ryder belted a 4th-inning 3-run homer and doubled.
