A memorial service to remember the spirit of former Farrell High basketball great Julius McCoy has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium.
The public is invited. Doors to the gymnasium will open at 11 a.m.
Mr. McCoy, who led Farrell High to its first state championship in 1952, died earlier this month in Harrisburg, where his funeral was held April 11.
A local committee, chaired by Wilbert L. Shannon of Wheatland, is coordinating the service. The gymnasium was the top choice for the site of the service. “We need to have it (a memorial service), we need closure,” Shannon said shortly after Mr. McCoy’s death. “And we need to have it in the gym. All the hard work, all the sweat, it was there. That was where it all started for Julius.”
