Park, recreation programs need fundraising help

Residents of Greenville and surrounding communities need to wake up.
We have one of God’s loveliest creations along the Shenango River, Riverside Park. This park with its ballfields has provided much enjoyment to thousands of people over the years.
Many of us can remember the grandstands at the baseball field, the many activities at the amphitheater, the dances and parties, the annual St. Michael’s bazaars, the high dive stand and the changing rooms adjacent to the river, how the dam backed up water to make lagoons and the softball tournaments that brought the best teams in the state to Greenville.
Today there are many other activities and events at the park, from family reunions and kids’ entertainment to the many persons who walk around the loop daily, plus the baseball games, and so many other things that make for a fun summer at the park. Everyone who grew up in Greenville has swum in Memorial Pool.
We certainly have a real treasure here but Greenville Area Leisure Services Association needs financial support to keep it alive.
GALSA lost much of its financial support when the three big industries pulled out of Greenville. Greenville Area School District has also stopped its financial support. GALSA needs money to keep going.
The winter fundraiser of GALSA’s Executive Director Eric Bielata and his friends jumping into the icy water of Pymatuning Lake doesn’t quite do it! Next year’s budget is now being prepared and a shortfall exists.
Our entire community should participate in raising funds to keep GALSA, our beloved park, the Rec Center and the soccer fields alive and active.
