The father of a woman who disappeared for six weeks in the summer of 2007 will spend 6 to 23 months behind bars for slashing the neck of an Indiana man.
Darryl Dwane Cleveland, 42, of 1227 Negley St., Farrell, knocked Clyde Campbell to the ground Dec. 16 and cut a 5-inch gash in the man’s neck with a pocket knife.
Cleveland, the father of Danielle Morton, blamed Campbell for Ms. Morton’s disappearance.
Cleveland pleaded guilty Sept. 2 to reckless endangerment, simple assault and possession of a controlled substance. A count of attempted murder was dropped.
Ms. Morton disappeared June 26, 2007, and made no contact with her family until Aug. 4, 2007, when she called her mother Darlene Cleveland to say she was in Chicago.
Police never charged anyone in Ms. Morton’s disappearance. According to court documents, Cleveland believed she had been dosed with ecstasy or heroine and kidnapped, then taken to Chicago. She was only able to make contact after a beating landed her in the hospital, he said.
Minutes before the stabbing, police said Campbell left a tavern on Roemer Boulevard in Farrell and Cleveland accused him of having a hand in his daughter’s alleged kidnapping.
Police said Cleveland pulled a knife, knocked Campbell to the ground and said he was going to kill him.
Campbell received stitches to close the neck wounds at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, police said.
Ms. Morton’s disappearance raised local concern because she is mother to three young children.
During an investigation, police said they had a lead that she had bought a bus ticket to Indiana, but never listed Campbell as a suspect in the case.
