MERCER

A teenage driver crashed his maroon van through a ballfield fence Thursday morning at Brandy Springs Park and did 360s in the grass, laughing all the while as he tore up the grass, according to witnesses who stopped the van full of teenagers.

Mercer police are not naming those involved because they are under 18, but said the driver is charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and reckless and careless driving.

The van veered off a park road at about 9 a.m. and went into the grass, fishtailing and spinning its tires, police said.

Witnesses said the driver was laughing as he drove, police said. The van went back across the road and through a ball field fence.

The van spun around on the field and drove back through the hole it had made in the fence. Fence posts were unearthed, and the net of chain link was down on the ground in places.

Witnesses said the driver was laughing until they stopped the van by standing in front of it. He started crying while waiting for police to arrive, they said.

The juveniles were taken to Mercer police station and released to their parents or guardians, police said.

There is no estimate on the amount of damage yet, police said. There was grass torn up in the ball field but no ruts.
