Detours and street closings start Monday morning as work begins on Main Street in Greenville, on the streetscape and water line replacement projects.

Daily road closings, excluding weekends, are expected to run from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Main, Borough Manager Ryan T. Eggleston said.

Main will be closed from Achre Way to Water Street. Traffic coming from the west on Main can turn right or left onto Water and get back onto Main at Mercer Street.

Traffic traveling on Main from the east will be able to turn left or right onto Mercer or can go down Main a little further and turn onto Achre or Canal Street to navigate the downtown area.

Regular traffic flow will be maintained evenings and weekends, and parking will be banned on Main in marked areas, Eggleston said.

There will be a two-week period where downtown Main Street will be closed to traffic day and night to allow for the quickest completion of work, construction crews have said.

Tractor-trailers and other large trucks that normally pass through the downtown will be directed to take Kidds Mill Road off state Route 18 in Pymatuning Township.

Phase two of streetscape, the downtown revitalization project, spans Main from the former Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad tracks to the Main Street bridge.

SET Inc. of Lowellville, Ohio, is the contractor doing the job for $1,343,864, covered by a $1.17 million state grant and $260,000 from the borough. It will feature new lighting, sidewalks, benches, brick crosswalks and landscaping to match phase one, which covers Main from Mercer Street to the tracks.

Most of the work is expected to be completed by Nov. 1 and Main Street will be paved next spring, SET representatives have said.

The aging water lines are being replaced by Kirila Contractors Inc., Brookfield, which should take five to six weeks. Greenville Water Authority members said affected customers will be notified in advance of water service disruption.

The water lines are also being replaced to improve fire protection and is costing the water authority $186,640.
