State police have filed 23 charges against a Grove City area man who allegedly led them on a chase through several municipalities.
The most serious charges Steven P. Filer, 52, of 43 George Junior Road, faces are fleeing police, a felony, and reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. Police also charged Filer with speeding, reckless driving, passing on the left, a turn signal violation, 10 counts of running stop signs, two counts of lane violations, and four counts of driving at an unsafe speed.
Filer’s arraignment is set for 5/21 Wednesday before District Judge Lawrence Silvis, Worth Township.
Police released this account:
Filer was seen speeding at 8:38 p.m. April 16 on Interstate 80 in Wolf Creek Township and refused to stop for police. Filer eventually left I-80 and traveled at speeds of up to 100 mph through Wolf Creek and Pine Townships, Grove City and Liberty, Springfield and Findley townships, with three police cruisers in pursuit.
On state Route 258, Filer was traveling between 80 and 90 mph when his pickup slid in a left-hand curve and crashed at 8:52 p.m. at 410 Woodland Road, Findley.
Filer was thrown out a side window. He was taken to Grove City Medical Center and flown to Pittsburgh. He spent a little more than a week in Allegheny General Hospital.
A state police trooper suffered a hand injury and his cruiser was damaged while trying to stop the pickup. The trooper, who was not named, was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.
