The Humane Society of Mercer County and state police are continuing to investigate leads into the death of a blind pony in Shenango Township.

“People have to understand these things don’t get solved overnight,” said Sandi Drabick, the Humane Society’s executive director.

Any tips that come in to the Humane Society are forwarded to state police troopers, who decide which ones to investigate further, Mrs. Drabick said.

Kahlua, a 10-year-old pony, was found dead in its pasture at state Route 318 and Bethel-Wilmington Road on April 30 by his owner Tory Morgan of Sharon.

Police and Ms. Morgan believe Kahlua was possibly dragged and hit by an all-terrain vehicle. ATV tracks were visible in the pasture, which is also home to Ms. Morgan’s four other horses, who had minor cuts and scratches.

A well-known equine forensic veterinarian has become involved with the case and the Humane Society sent photos to the woman, who doesn’t want her name revealed, Mrs. Drabick said.

The vet may be able to tell from the photos exactly what happened to Kahlua. The pony will also come up for discussion at a conference the vet is holding this week in Florida, Mrs. Drabick said.

That vet is just one example of people all over the country and even Canada, but also including Mercer County, who are offering support or sending donations for the reward fund, which is at $6,000, she said.

“We have had a tremendous outpour. It’s been in newspapers everywhere. ... This is high profile,” Mrs. Drabick said of Kahlua’s story.

If anyone is arrested for killing Kahlua, they will face criminal animal cruelty charges and many people have told the Humane Society they would want to attend the court proceedings.

“The anger that’s out there is just horrendous,” Mrs. Drabick said.
