Bullied boy may return; cameras OK’d

WEST MIDDLESEX

A boy bullied while riding a bus to West Middlesex schools may return to the district, board President Thomas Hubert said.

The boy’s parents pulled their son from school March 17 more than a year after school officials became aware of constant tormenting made by a group of students.

Hubert said he spoke with the boy’s father, who told him he’ll let his son decide if he wants to return to school.

The boy, an elementary student in the district, hasn’t been in school since, but Hubert said he isn’t aware the student has enrolled elsewhere.

The bullying included taunting, shoving, slapping and pushing, transportation supervisor Charlie Long told school directors.

For about the last three years, the same group of six students has caused problems on the bus that transports children living on Route 62 and Bartholomew, Bend, and Yankee Ridge roads in Lackawannock Township to and from school.

Since learning last week of the bad bus behavior, school directors agreed to place a camera on the bus. They plan to budget money to equip the whole fleet this summer before school resumes, they said.

Superintendent Alan J. Baldarelli said Long is working to get the camera put on the bus. Until then, Baldarelli said someone, possibly himself, will ride along to monitor the activity.

In a past effort to control the bullying, elementary Principal Vince Comiskey rode on the troubled bus and said he was “amazed at how disrespectful” the children were.

The district had a portable camera it used on its bus fleet, but stopped when companies quit servicing parts for video cassette systems.

A digital camera system costs about $1,375 to install on each bus and would cost the district about $22,000 to equip its 16-bus fleet, Long said.
