Snowmobile tracks criss-crossed Pymatuning State Park north of Jamestown, and dozens of children rode sleds down several of its hills on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Pymatuning Trailblazers’ annual Snow Fun Day, when the club sponsors sledding and offers snowmobile rides and activities including an evening laser light show.

This year’s event was significantly different than some previous ones in that it actually snowed.

“You can only plan so much,” said Jeff Climans, club director, adding that they try to have the event on a day likely to have snow, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.

This year it did, as Jamestown was blanketed with several inches of snow. On Saturday, the sun was shining and temperatures were in the 20s, and several people said it was a “beautiful day” for such a gathering.

One of them was Chuck Mastran, who came from Liberty, Ohio, with friend Monica Czopor and her 3-year-old son Christian.

Mrs. Czopor said they’ve attended several times.

“It was nice that it snowed for a change, she said. “Winter is busting out all over.”

They pulled Christian along on a sled, and said they let him ride as a passenger on one of the snowmobiles.

On a hill near the main parking lot, Nicole Hayne of Greenville watched her two children, Bennett, 4, and Reagan, 9, make their way back up the hill after coasting down on sleds.

“We’re trying to get (Bennett) on the snowmobile,” she said. “I found out about this through Facebook, and this morning the kids were all ready to go. It beats staying in the house.”

One of the park’s buildings featured arts and crafts for children and their parents.

“We made a birdfeeder,” said Renee Love of Meadville, who was there with her 3-year-old son Tyler.

She said she was glad this was happening because “it’s hard to find things to do in the winter.”
