Brookfield native, WWII vet ran farms in Colorado
ALAMOSA, Colo. — Don G. Doyle, Homelake, Colo., died at 6:24 p.m. (MT) Monday, July 14, 2008, in San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa. He was 88.
Mr. Doyle was born March 27, 1920, in Brookfield to Harry and Elizabeth A. Lewis Doyle.
Don was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, having served during World War II.
He farmed in San Luis Valley since 1954, managing the Coors Farms, Weisbart Farms and Center (Colo.) Potato Growers.
Don received the first Man of the Year Award in Center in 1960 and was instrumental in starting the annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast in Center.
For many years, Don was a member and served on the board of directors of the Commonwealth Irrigation Co.
He loved sports and was an avid wrestling fan. His joy was supporting his family in their activities.
His wife, the former Anne E. Calvert, whom he married Aug. 3, 1946, in Lima, Ohio, preceded him in death March 7 of this year.
Don is survived by: his children, Di and her husband Fred Machado, Alamosa; Dana and her husband Kenny Smith, Center; David F. Doyle and Richard M. Doyle, both Sanford, Colo.; and Deb and her husband Lynn Christensen, Loma, Colo.; as well as 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Nielson Library at Adams State College.
