Published July 17, 2008 02:41 pm - Kathryn Metzger Ferringer, Hermitage, formerly of Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday (7-15-08) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of natural causes. She was 88.

Kathryn Metzger Ferringer, Hermitage, formerly of Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday (7-15-08) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of natural causes. She was 88.

Mrs. Ferringer was born Saturday, Aug. 23, 1919, in Sharpsville, the daughter of Frank William and Sara Plant Metzger.

Kathryn graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1937 and then attended the former Shenango Valley Business School, Sharon.

Her husband, George A. Ferringer, whom she married June 27, 1942, passed away June 26, 1989.

They lived for 35 years in Emlenton, Venango County, returned to Hermitage in 1977 and also resided for 13 years in Boca Raton, Fla.

In her early years, she was employed by Mercer County Department of Public Assistance; the former Protected Home Circle and Carnegie Illinois Steel, both Sharon.

A homemaker, she belonged to Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage.

Kathryn was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 237, Sharpsville; and was active in both the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA.

She was a volunteer and gave much of her free time from 1989-96 to the Meals-on-Wheels program at Christ Lutheran Church, Sharon. She volunteered for both the Farrell and Sharon Health places; UPMC Horizon in Farrell; and Sharon Regional Cancer Care Center in Hermitage.

At the age of 83, she returned to work at the Prince of Peace Center, Farrell; and for Career Link, Sharon. She enjoyed working until she was 84, at which time she was unable to continue due to an injury she suffered in an accident.

She leaves: her two sons, William Reid Ferringer and his wife Ronna, Butler; and Christopher G. Ferringer, Hermitage; eight grandchildren, Heidi A. Kizak and her husband Timothy J., Amy Ristvey and her husband Matthew M., Elizabeth A. Ferringer, Michael Ferringer, John Ferringer and his wife Sally, Michele Ferringer, Kimberly Harzey and her husband Phillip, and Shelly Ide and her husband Steve; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Metzger, who passed away Dec. 28, 1992.
