She passed away at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 78.

A memorial service will be held May 24 for Annette S. Whaley, Whispering Oaks, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, formerly of Cynthiana, Ky. She passed away at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Whaley was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Bourbon County, Ky., a daughter of the late Lacey and Lida Gorman Smith.

She was a 1948 graduate of Bourbon County High School and moved to Hermitage in 1971.

Following her husband’s retirement in 1986, Mrs. Whaley returned to Kentucky, where she and her husband enjoyed boating on Cave Run Lake. She moved back to Hermitage in August 2004.

A homemaker, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Cynthiana, and of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon.

Mrs. Whaley was active in the Democratic political party and was an avid bridge player. Earlier in her life, she was a volunteer for many years at what is now UPMC Horizon, Farrell.

Her husband, William R. Whaley, whom she married May 5, 1950, passed away Aug. 19, 2004.

Surviving are: a daughter, Lynn Stroot and her husband Terry, O’Fallon, Mo.; two sons, Phillip N. Whaley and his wife Suzanne, Dayton, Ohio; and William Rice Whaley and his wife Lexie, Hermitage; and eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Whaley was preceded in death by a brother, David F. Smith; and a sister, Alice Logan.

Mrs. Whaley was proud to be a 20-year survivor of breast cancer.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, Texas, 75244.
