Ruby Louise Black Brophy, 238 S. Market St., New Wilmington, formerly of Springfield Township, passed away Sunday morning, May 4, 2008, in Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care, New Wilmington. She was 88.

Mrs. Brophy was born Jan. 16, 1920, in New Castle to Lewis and Mae Smith Black.

She was a graduate of New Castle High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Brophy was a former member of the Leesburg Ladies Club and belonged to Leesburg Presbyterian Church and its adult Sunday school class.

Her faith, flowers and family were important to her. Ruby loved reading and writing poetry.

Her husband, Gaylord E. Brophy, whom she married May 6, 1938, passed away May 8, 2005.

Surviving are: three sons, Randall Brophy and his wife Mary, Williamsport, Pa.; Wayne Brophy and his wife MaryLou, Lehighton, Pa.; and Keith E. Brophy and his wife Donna, Pulaski; two daughters, Eileen Rodgers and her husband Allan, New Wilmington; and Judith Ann Lewis and her husband Richard, Uniontown, Ohio; a sister, Beverly Metz, New Castle; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and nine stepgrandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Brophy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lewis “Bus” Black; and two sisters, Edyce Black and Betty Beckman.

Memorial contributions may be made to Leesburg Presbyterian Church, 1831 Perry Highway, Volant, PA 16156.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (5-7-08) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME OF LEESBURG, 1778 Perry Highway, Springfield Township.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (5-8-08) in the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Gomola, pastor of Leesburg Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment: Leesburg Cemetery, Springfield Township.
