Sharon grad was teacher, funeral director, therapist
A memorial service will be held Saturday for George William “Bill” Abernathy Jr., 97 Zahniser Road, Jefferson Township. He passed away at 8:14 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 73.
Mr. Abernathy was born Nov. 9, 1934, in Sharon to George W. Abernathy Sr. and Isabel Brown Abernathy.
He was an alumnus of Sharon High School and Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science; graduated from Clarion State University; and earned a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Westminster College, New Wilmington.
George was a mobile therapist for the former F.C.C.S., now Children’s Behavior Health, Sharon. Previously he was a licensed funeral director, owning a funeral home in Franklin and had also taught elementary school in Oil City.
His wife, the former Pamela Kelly, survives a home in Mercer.
Also surviving are: his children, George W. Zahniser, Sheredon, Ill.; Tracy Abernathy, Shenango Valley; Heather Stemann, Greenville, S.C.; Elizabeth Rodgers, Hendersonville, Tenn.; Gordon Abernathy, Shenango Valley; and Leslie Ann Abernathy, Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lynda Kerins.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shenango Valley Community Library, 11 N. Sharpsville Ave., Sharon 16146; or to a library of the donor’s choice.
