Susan Eleanor Vechnak of 708 Spring St., Grove City, went to her final rest at 4:20 a.m. Sunday (4-27-08) in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, following a sudden illness. With her family surrounding her, she slipped peacefully to her rest. She was 91 years young.

Mrs. Vechnak was born March 19, 1917, in Leckrone, Pa.; to the late Jacob and Bessie Hruby Krofcheck.

Susan loved spending time with her family and she especially loved being with young children, which always brought a smile to her face. Susan was the oldest member of her extended family prior to her death, and was known to be the heart of the family. Susan taught her family many wonderful lessons about kindness and generosity to others.

Susan also enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends through cards for holidays and birthdays. She enjoyed receiving cards as well, and was honored on her 90th birthday with a card shower, receiving well over 75 cards from family and friends.

Susan was also a scratch-off lottery ticket fan, and was surprised this year to receive a ticket on her 91st birthday from her brother and sister-in-law which was worth $100. Susan liked to use her winnings to help others.

Susan retired in 1982 as assistant director of housekeeping for Grove City College. She loved her experiences there and the wonderful friends that she made.

Prior to the birth of her children, Sue also worked at LaBelle Beauty Shop and at F.J. Wells Grocery Store, which was on Elm Street in Grove City.

Susan married the love of her life, Albert Vechnak, on Nov. 28, 1940. Albert preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1989.

Susan was a member of Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Deborah Marie Vechnak, Grove City; and her son, Gary John Vechnak, Grove City. She is also survived by a brother, John W. Krofcheck and his wife Louise, Hermitage; and a sister, Joanne Ellis and her husband Charles, Sharpsville.

The memory of Susan also survives in the hearts of her grandchildren whom she adored, Peter Vechnak and his wife Anna, Charlotte, N.C.; Courtney Stephenson and her husband Rob, Lake Mary, Fla.; and Lauren O’Donnell and her husband Kevin, Winter Haven, Fla. The spirit of Sue survives in her great-grandchildren whom she loved, Ryan and Katie O’Donnell and Maddie and Tyler Stephenson.

Susan is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved, including some nieces who were very dear to her heart, Vicki Wallace, Christa Province and Lexi Walker.

In addition to her husband, Susan was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela Carole; her parents; her sisters, Anna Trocheck, Sophia Hirschi and Mary Shaffer; and her brothers, Joseph, Jacob, Anthony “Tony” Krofcheck and an infant brother, William Krofcheck.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grove City Area School District, 611 Highland Ave., Grove City 16127, in care of a special fund that will be used to help children in need in Susan’s memory.
