Harvest time in the city

Farrell officials are hoping a new trick will be a safer treat for kids to celebrate Halloween.

The city’s first Community Harvest Festival will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. the night before Halloween.

“We’re just trying to create a safer environment for the kids,” Southwest Mercer County Regional Police Chief Riley Smoot said. “The goal is to get the kids to come down and participate.”

In order to make it successful, the community is being asked to help out, he said.

“We’re asking everyone in the community to donate a bag of candy,” he said.

Cash donations will also be accepted, he said.

Several churches, the school and community groups are working with the city recreation commission to plan the fest, which will start with a parade from the Stey-Nevant Library to Veterans’ Square that starts at 4 p.m.

A costume contest, games, food and a hay ride are also planned.

The festivities will last until 6 p.m.

Trick-or-treat will also be held from 4 to 6 p.m., and kids can do either, Smoot said. People passing out candy are asked to turn their porch lights on during that time.

For more information or to make a donation call the city at 724-983-2700.
