HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP

Acrobats, elephants and Big Top attractions are on their way to Hempfield Township, with the Kelly Miller Bros. Circus set to appear July 27 in the Greenville Plaza.

The public is invited to view the circus’ arrival and setup, which kicks off at 9 a.m.

“As trucks pull onto the lot from the town the circus performed in the night before, animals are unloaded, stakes are driven and the men and elephants lift the giant Big Top into the air,” according to a news release.

Attractions include sled dogs, tigers, trapeze acts, a juggler, a clown, acrobats, horse riders, other aerial acts and three elephants.

The circus is sponsored by the Committee to Promote the Greenville Area, a citizen-run group that plans to use the proceeds from the circus and other money to install an electronic community billboard in Prairie Park and build a second statue in Greenville as part of its Bronze Statues Around Town program, said their news release.

The Kelly Miller Bros. Circus was started by the Miller family in 1938, during the Great Depression. Today, the circus tours and performs in more than 200 cities, traveling nearly 10,000 miles a year.

The show has grown to include 72 people, 24 animals, all carried in six tractor-trailers and nine other vehicles.

Tickets for the two shows at 2 and 4:30 p.m. July 27 are $10 for adults and $5 for kids in advance, or $12 and $6 the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased at Giant Eagle, Hurlbert’s Hardware, Stone Arch Restaurant, Padrone’s Pizza and Veado’s Mini Mart.

The Kelly Miller Circus says it is “deeply committed to maintaining the health and well being of not only our animals but of all the Earth’s endangered species.”

Its use of the animals is regulated and licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture, which conducts routine inspections.
