Local high school seniors were honored with Leadership Scholarships during the 19th annual Strimbu Memorial Fund barbecue dinner in Yankee Lake Ballroom.
The Strimbu Memorial Fund was founded in 1990 to honor Nick Strimbu Jr. During his life, he developed a legacy of leadership, self-reliance and service.
A $10,000 Leader Scholarship is awarded to the outstanding high school senior from 10 local school districts who demonstrated scholarship, leadership and self-reliance.
This year’s recipient is Carly Rae Turk, daughter of Jeffrey and Nancy Turk, Hermitage. The Hickory High School senior plans to major in business and political science at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.
Students receiving $1,000 awards are:
• Morgan Marie Bonekovic, a daughter of Ronda Bonekovic, Masury. The Brookfield High School graduate plans to study communication disorders at Slippery Rock University.
• Cassandra Lynn Byers, a daughter of Craig and Nancy Byers, Pulaski. The West Middlesex High School graduate plans to study to be a physicians assistant at Gannon University, Erie.
• Gianna Teresa Colella, a daughter of Louis and Lynann Colella, West Middlesex. She is a graduate of Sharpsville High School and plans to study music education at Youngstown State University.
• Joel Thomas Grover, a son of Andrew and Thea Grover, Greenville. The Greenville High School graduate plan to major in production technology/design at North Carolina School of the Arts, Winston-Salem, N.C.
• Rachel M. McDonald, a daughter of Keith and Mary McDonald, Transfer. The Reynolds High School graduate plans to attend Baldwin-Wallace University, Berea, Ohio.
• Jenna Rae Miller, a daughter of Russell and Mindy Miller, Farmdale, Ohio. A Joseph Badger High School graduate plans to study athletic training at Ohio State University.
• Serina Marie Miller, a daughter of Gary and Anne Miller, Sharon. The Sharon High School graduate plans to major in criminal justice at North Carolina University of Charlotte.
• Erin Marie Puko, a daughter of Dennis and Elizabeth Puko, Farrell. The Farrell High School graduate plans to major in international business at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
• Jason Joseph Wolinsky, a son of Joseph and Joan Wolinsky, Hermitage. The graduate of Kennedy Catholic School, Hermitage, plans to study mechanical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
