McConnell’s Mill is ready for the season

LAWRENCE COUNTY — May 24 has been set as opening day for McConnell’s Mill State Park in Lawrence County.
The 19th century grist mill will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Interpretive tours will be 1 and 2 p.m. Fridays, 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 4 p.m. Sundays at the mill.
Additional tours for groups can be scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Fridays through Sundays by calling the park.
These events are set in the park’s Kildoo Picnic Area:
• Heart hikes — 4 p.m. May 25 and June 8.
• “Art in Nature” — 2 p.m. May 31.
• “Guide to Geocaching” — 3 p.m. June 1.
• “Crossing the River” — 2 p.m. June 7.

Venture outdoors Saturday
PITTSBURGH -- The 8th Annual Venture Outdoors Festival is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in Pittsburgh.
The free festival offers kayaking, canoeing, fishing, yoga, biking, climbing, exhibitors, music and food.
Water taxis will shuttle participants between Millvale Riverfront Park and Washington’s Landing on Herr’s Island.

Buhl Club schedules learn-to-swim lessons

SHARON — These Red Cross “Summer Learn-to-Swim” lessons are planned for Mondays and Wednesdays, June 2 through July 2, at the F.H. Buhl Club, 28 Pine Ave., Sharon:
• Levels 1 and 2 — 4 to 4:45 p.m.
• Levels 3 and 4 — 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.
• Levels 5 and 6 — 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.

Lakeview library helping to 'Catch the Reading Bug'

SANDY LAKE TOWNSHIP — “Catch the Reading Bug” will be the summer reading program theme at Lakeview Area Public Library. Children may register from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in the library; and during Sandy Lake Days, June 13 and 14 in Sandy Lake Borough Building’s community room.
The summer reading will begin with a picnic from 9:30 to 11 a.m. June 18 in McQuiston Park, Sandy Lake.
The summer reading program will be every Wednesday through July 23. The last day will include presentation of “Wish Upon a Butterfly.”
A Painted Lady butterfly can be purchased for $5 through the library and picked up by July 23. Butterflies will be released at 11 a.m. Funds will support the program and give children a chance to watch a butterfly grow from the cocoon stage into an adult.
First United Methodist taking Angel Food orders

SHARON — Orders for Angel Food Ministries food distribution will be taken at these times in First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., Sharon:
• 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
• 4 to 6 p.m. May 30 and June 6.
• 10 a.m. to noon May 31 and June 7.
Food is to be picked up between 9 and 11 a.m. June 21 at the church. Participants should take a small box, laundry basket or cooler in which to carry home the food.
Cost of the basic food unit is $30 and must be paid in cash, money order or food stamps. Checks will not be accepted. Info: 724-983-0200.
