The Humane Society of Mercer County is still investigating a suspected animal cruelty case, but it wants the public to know their donations are helping the hurt puppy.
The female pit bull, who was found Jan. 13 in a Sharon parking lot with multiple injuries, is still recovering at a veterinary clinic in Cleveland, Humane Society executive director Sandi Drabick said.
The puppy had surgery to repair damage to a growth plate, tissue, tendons and ligaments in two of her legs and is responding to therapy.
The public’s response has been a big help in the puppy’s healing process, Mrs. Drabick said.
“We have received $500 to help with her vet costs and would like for the public to know just how much we appreciate the donations,” she said.
She wants to remind people the Humane Society does more than just rescue abandoned animals.
This particular case is an example of the agency doing whatever it takes to give an animal the second chance it deserves, Mrs. Drabick said.
The Humane Society and veterinarians who examined the puppy believe she was intentionally hurt, especially since she was found alone, outside in the cold. They’re also worried the puppy has littermates who may be suffering somewhere.
The Humane Society is offering a $100 reward for information leading to someone being cited for animal cruelty and can be reached at 724-981-5445.
They’re also accepting donations for the puppy’s medical care, which can be sent to the Humane Society of Mercer County, Box 1046, Hermitage 16148.
